Newell Sacked as Grimsby Town boss
Grimsby Town are the latest League Two club to be searching for a new manager following the news that they have sacked Mike Newell following their ninth defeat of the season and fourth loss on the bounce at home to Rochdale on Saturday. The Grimsby board now join fellow League Two club Notts County in their search for a new boss but unlike the Magpies, The Mariners don’t have the luxury of multi-millionaire owners and must convince any prospective manager that they can get out of the current postion that they find themsleves in with the side currently languishing at the foot of the table just one place above bottom side Darlington.
The club released a statement explaining their decision, stating “Despite the intention for support beyond the recent poor results, the club has dismissed Mike due to irretrievable breakdown.”
“The directors believe they have done everything possible to back him during his period with the club but were left with no alternative but to terminate his contract with immediate effect.”
Newell leaves the Blundell Park hot seat after just twelve months in charge and with a record of just 13 wins from 54 games. The former Luton and Hartlepool boss must now look at where he goes in his career since this was his first job back in management following the end of a successful spell in charge at Luton guiding them to two promotions before the relationship came to a bitter end following Newell’s public criticisms of then Chairman, Bill Tomlins, and the way he ran the club and lack of investment. This was not before the former Everton and Blackburn striker had caused controversy throughout football with his claimes that he had been offered bungs by players agents, which lead to a police investigation. He is also remembered for his infamous comments towards a female assistant referee!
With Luton Town currently looking for a new manager following the Conference club’s recent sacking of Mick Harford it would be no surprise to see Newell return to Kenilworth Road in what would be an ironic turn of events whilst Newell’s replacement at Grimsby is anyone’s guess at this stage but we at The Sack Race would not be surprised to see the Grimsby board offer former Mariners midfielder and current West Brom coach Michael Appleton his first step on the football management ladder.
