MacDonald Puts His Name Forward As Aston Villa Continue Search For New Manager
The Managerial Vacancy at Aston Villa is continuing to the be the source of much speculation and that looks set to continue for a few days more at least with the first round of interviews set to get underway, the picture has become somewhat muddied in recent days but we do know that Kevin MacDonald has decided he wants the job on a full-time basis. The Caretaker boss is now the clear favourite once again with the bookmakers in the Next Aston Villa Manager Odds following this announcement, the Scot has been at the club for 15 years and is well respected at the club making him a popular choice among the players with several names voicing their support for him.
Since Martin O’Neill left the club just before the start of the season the likes of Sven Goran Eriksson, Bob Bradley and David Moyes have all been on top of the betting market, Bradley though has ruled himself by signing a new contract as USA Manager while David Moyes seems an unlikely choice despite a rush of money for the Scot over the weekend. Eriksson is still understood to be interested in the role and he could fit the bill of Randy Lerner despite not being popular with the fans, the American Chairman has made it clear he is looking for someone with Premier League experience which on the face of it could rule out Kevin MacDonald.
MacDonald though would argue that his experience at the club and in the backroom at Villa Park would be enough to secure him the job on a full-time basis, he has to be the front runner and few would be surprised to see the Scot appointed beofre Villa meet Stoke after the International break. Another man who has thrown his hat into the ring is former Dutch player Ronald Koeman, the experienced Manager has stated publicly he would love the chance to come to England and sees Villa Park as the ideal destination. It is clear that he lacks Premier League experience but he is well respected across Europe having Managed the likes of Benfica and Valencia among others and would be a big name appointment.
The Sack Race feels that Randy Lerner will make the conservative appointment and stick with Kevin MacDonald, the Scot has done a decent job since being in temporary charge and he is likely to be given opportunity to take the team further. Lerner as a Chairman likes to stay in the background and that is likely to be mirrored in his next Managerial appointment, appointing Managers like a Koeman or an Eriksson would be out of character for the cautious American owner.
