Martin O’Neill Struggling To Take Aston Villa To Next Level
Martin O’Neill has done an excellent job during his time at Aston Villa but once again he is spending the Summer worrying about his star names being taken off of him by so called bigger clubs, last Summer it was the Gareth Barry saga that disrupted their pre season and the same is happening this year with James Milner also being hunted by the big spending boys from Eastlands. Question marks must now start to be asked as to whether O’Neill can take the club into the Champions League with their better players clearly wanting to leave given half the chance, in each of the last two seasons they have been in a good position for the top four at Christmas only to fade badly at the back end of the campaign.
O Neill must be starting to get itchy feet at Villa Park as he he continues to bang his head against a brick wall, the club have been very quiet in the transfer market during the Summer and they do look one or two players short as they look to break into that top four. Man City have shown that even with millions and millions spent on the squad that is no guarantee of Champions League football, that is an ominous sign for O’Neill and the Villa fans who may have to settle for a top six finish once again this term.
As for O’Neill himself there have been one or two rumours circling about his future in recent months with the former Leicester Manager linked with a number of jobs, the Next Man United Manager Odds continue to feature O’Neill and he will jump at the chance to replace Sir Alex at some stage. At the moment though there is no sign of Ferguson retiring leaving O’Neill in a tough position, he is facing a losing battle as he tries to take Aston Villa forward while at the same time there does not seem to be the chance for him to move to any of the bigger clubs in the Premier League.
