Strachan Odds On Favourite to Return to Southampton
Gordon Strachan continues to be linked with the vacant managerial position at St Marys following the recent takeover of the club by Swiss Businessman Markus Liebherr. Liebherr sacked Mark Wotte immediately and speculation has been rife since with rumours of Strachan returning to the club for a second stint following a successful period which saw Strachan lead the Saints to the FA Cup Final in 2003.
Strachan has spent the last few years in Scotland with Celtic before leaving at the end of last season following a poor end to the season which saw them miss out on the title to fierce rivals Rangers. The Scot may well want a return to English Football and with a new owner on board at Southampton it may be seen as the ideal place by Strachan despite the club starting on -10 in League 1 following their relegation and financial difficulties.
Other names in the frame for the job include former Portsmouth Manager Tony Adams who is looking for a return to management and Steve Coppell who left Reading following their Play-Off defeat in May but it is Strachan who remains the favourite. Adams maybe more likely to drop down to League 1 as he looks to rebuild his reputation but having managed rivals Portsmouth he may not be the most popular of choices with the Saints faithful.
