Last season it took Ipswich Town 14 games to record their first victory of the season, it was a run of results that very nearly saw Roy Keane get the sack from Portman Road but they decided to stick with fiery Irishman and they will be hoping it pays dividends this campaign. Keane has had an up-and-down Managerial career so far with both success and failure during his time at Sunderland seeing him leave the Stadium of Light, he joined Ipswich last year and has made it clear that he is looking to take the Tractor Boys back to the Premier League.

Keane slowly started to turn things around at Ipswich last season but following their poor start they were playing to avoid relegation which did with some ease, expectations are different though this year and the early signs for Keane have been encouraging. They secured a fantastic win on the first day of the season as they went way to Middlesbrough and claimed a 3-1 victory, that was an excellent start against the pre-season favourites for promotion and the feeling is that Ipswich could be in for good season. Keane himself has been vocal recently as he tries to revamp the squad before the window closes, players have gone in and out of Portman Road with the Manager looking to strengthen the squad in certain areas.

There is no doubt that a character like Roy Keane is good for the game, his news conferences have become must watch viewing over the past year with plenty of plain speaking and trembling journalists ready to ask the questions to the former Man United Captain. He is certainly good value and a Championship with Roy Keane in it in some capacity is certainly all the stronger, he is under pressure though with the board giving him a second chance to take the team forward. Keane will know that a play-off place has to be the minimum requirement for the Tractor Boys with promotion to the Premier League the aim in the near future, if he fails to achieve that it is highly unlikely he will be at Portman Road for the long term.

Keane showed that he is not afraid of walking away from a job as he did at Sunderland and that could well be on his mind if things don’t pan out this season at Ipswich, he clearly is a Manager that understandably feels he needs to be able to take  a team forward and if he feels that is not happening he will take action. At the moment though things look rosy in the garden for Roy Keane and Ipswich town and the Sack Race would not be surprised to see the Tractor Boys heading back to the top flight come May.
