David Moyes

David Moyes has been the manager of Everton FC since he took over from Walter Smith 2002 when the team were in relegation trouble. Moyes started out as a coach at Preston North End – the club he finished his playing career at – and his potential was quickly recognised as he was made assistant to Gary Peters at the club. He was then fast-tracked into the top job at Deepdale in November 1998 after Peters was sacked and he immediately saved them from relegation from the old Division 2. Everton are currently experiencing some financial difficulties which has led many to speculate that Moyes will be tempted by a move to another club with bigger spending power.

Achievements

After saving Preston from relegation Moyes impressively won promotion with them to the old Division 1 in 2000 and quickly set his sights on the Premier League. In 2001 Preston went all the way to the Play-Off Final where they lost to Bolton Wanderers, but Moyes was proud of what he had achieved in just a matter of years. His good work was rewarded and he was hand-picked to manage a struggling Everton in March 2002.

The first priority for Moyes was to save The Toffees from relegation and he immediately obliged as Everton finished 15th. Everton have since come on leaps and bounds, with the highlight undoubtably beating Liverpool into 4th place in the 2004/05 season. Everton earnt back-to-back finished in 2008 and 2009, which has been followed by an 8th finish in 2010 and 7th last season.

He guided Everton to the FA Cup Final in 2009, where they lost to Chelsea. He has also won 3 LMA Manager of the Year Awards since joining Everton.

Job Security

While Everton are unlikely to sack David Moyes, he himself may decide its time to move on in the next couple of years. He has been touted as a possible replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson when the Man Utd boss eventually draws the curtains on his career. Moyes has often been frustrated at the lack of funds available to him at Everton and if their financial positin doesn’t improve anytime soon then he may just be tempted by a move to another club.
