Fabio Capello

Fabio Capello is the Manager of the England National Team and was appointed in January 2008 to succeed Steve McClaren charged with leading England to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Capello is the second foreign manager to be in charge of England with the other being Sven Goran Eriksson. Capello had a good playing career where he played for clubs such as Roma and Milan as well as Juventus where the majority of his playing days were served.

Capello also had the honour of playing for Italy on 32 occasions before ending his playing career and moving into coaching in the early 90’s.

Achievements:

Capello was appointed Manager of AC Milan in 1991 and he would go onto have unprecedented success with the Rossoneri at the San Siro. Milan would go onto win four league titles in five years under Capello and at one stage Milan went unbeaten for 58 League games which earned them the nickname ‘The Invincibles’. That team will go down in history as one of the greatest teams ever and included great players such as Marco Van Basten, Franco Baresi, Paulo Maldini, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard.

Capello also won the Champions League in 1994 with Milan when they demolished Barcelona 4-0 in the Final. Capello then moved to Real Madrid where he won the League in his one and only season in charge. Roma was the next stop for the Italian and he once again was a hit and won the Italian League Title in 2001 which ended a long wait for the Roma fans and Capello then moved onto Juventus where he played most of his playing career.

Capello would win two league titles in Turin but they were later stripped when Juventus were involved in the match fixing scandal and although there was no suggestion of Capello being involved he quickly moved back to Madrid. Once again Capello would only last one season in Madrid and he left the following year after yet again winning the La Liga title and was sacked after the fans attacked his defensive style of play. Capello took over as England Manager in January 2008 after England had failed to qualify for Euro 2008 which was a disaster for a footballing country like England.

Capello started the World Cup 2010 qualifying well winning his first seven matches and England look a different side than the one that failed to qualify foor Euro 2008 under Steve McLaren.

Job Security

Fabio Capello has a contract with The FA until the end of the 2010 World Cup with the option of a further two years depending on performance and England look to be on track for qualifying for the World Cup. Capello has already made it known that the England job will be his last in management as he is in his early 60’s and has half an eye on retirement. A good performance in 2010 may see Capello wanting a shot at the Euros in 2012 but that will all depend on how England get on in South Africa.

Capello is in a safe position at the moment and looks set to continue in the top job until at least 2010 if not beyond.
