Tony Adams

Tony Adams is the former Manager of Portsmouth after he was sacked from his position in February 2009. Adams was of course one of the finest players the Premier League has ever seen and will go down in history as a legend who spent his entire playing career at Highbury playing for Arsenal. Adams also enjoyed an illustrious International career playing for England on 66 occasions as well as being appointed Captain for some of those games.

Achievements

As an Arsenal player Adams made over 600 appearances for the club and went on to be considered one of the best centre-halves the country has ever known. Adams was the lynchpin of the famous back line of Arsenal in the early 90’s that included Adams, Bould, Winterburn and Dixon and the famous ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ chant was developed because they never seemed to concede a goal. Adams would captain the Gunners to various trophies including four league titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups among many others.

Adams was a true legend at Arsenal and after he retired he hoped to transfer that success to management. Adams first step into management was with Wycombe Wanderers and he was appointed at Adams Park in 2003 but was unable to keep them in League 1 and they were relegated to League 2. The following season started well but results began to falter and Adams resigned from the job in November 2004 citing personal reasons.

It wouldn’t be until 2006 that we saw Tony Adams in English football again and that was when he was appointed as Assistant-Manager to Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth. He formed a successful team with Redknapp including the FA Cup win in 2008 and he was the natural successor when Redknapp left to take over Spurs late in 2008. Adams endured a torrid time in charge at Fratton Park and was sacked after less than four months in charge with the team in a relegation battle.

Job Prospects

Tony Adams has had a difficult time in management at both Wycombe and Portsmouth but his reputation as a player is so strong he is still likely to be in contention for vacancies when they become available. Adams will want another bite at the cherry but is more likely to steer clear of the Premier League at this stage instead he may well want to build a team from one of the lower leagues. Having said that, Tony Adams is still a big football name and will be mentioned for some top jobs just on the strength of his previous playing achievements.
