Expect a turbulent campaign at Charlton under Karl Robinson

Mike Holden (@Ratings_Mike) previews Karl Robinson and Charlton ahead of the upcoming 2017/18 League One season.

Background

Karl Robinson swapped one relegated club for another last season, rocking up at The Valley in late November, a month after his six-year reign at MK Dons had come to an end. In theory, he now resides at a bigger club but the job prospects are markedly inferior with none of the tranquility and patience he benefited from at stadium:mk. The challenge of bringing cohesion is a monumental one. The players, the fans and the board effectively act as three separate entities.

Personality

Much derided for his overly self-promoting media persona, Robinson is possibly one of the most misunderstood managers on the circuit. Away from the cameras and dictaphones, he is driven by a desire to help people - to coach rather than manage - and compelled to create a happy working environment where nobody is left behind. He cares deeply about the morale of the group but he often struggles to keep his emotions in check and often says things in the heat of the moment that he later regrets.

Verdict

Outgoing first-team coach Simon Clark reckons sweeping changes are needed behind the scenes before Robinson can instigate lasting improvement, insisting too many players are happy to coast along in a bubble of mediocrity while supporters continue to direct their wrath at the owners. So considering how long it took Robinson to get a harmonious MK Dons side out of the division, a promotion charge under these conditions seems out of the question. With the manager so susceptible to the occasional meltdown, we should expect another turbulent campaign.

Prediction: bottom half
