Real Madrid bound Julen Lopetegui sacked by Spain on the eve of the 2018 World Cupby Jack Kitson / 13 June 2018, 11:21Tweet
Spain have sacked head coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the 2018 World Cup.
You simply cannot make these managerial scripts up anymore!
Spain’s preparations for the upcoming showcase spectacle, which kicks-off on Thursday, have been thrown into absolute tatters after the Spanish FA opted to terminate Lopetegui’s contract following Tuesday’s announcement that he would become the next Real Madrid boss.
Yesterday (Tuesday) Real Madrid revealed that Lopetegui had been chosen as the surprise replacement for Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu, beating off competition from the likes of Antonio Conte, Guti and Arsene Wenger.
But, the country’s governing body were left furious at the abrupt announcement - last month Lopetegui signed a new contract with Spain - and have now decided to make a managerial switch just 48 hours before La Roja’s opening Group B clash against rivals Portugal.
Spain would have received 2m Euros in compensation from Real Madrid, however their decision to axe Lopetegui means this is now void.
President Luis Rubiales said in Wednesday’s delayed press conference:
"We have been forced to dispense with the national coach, we wish him the best of luck.
“We are in a very complicated situation, but the players and the new coaching staff will do everything in their power to take Spain forward"
Spain’s sporting director Fernando Hierro will now be charged with winning Spain the famous golden trophy for the second time in eight years, following the country’s first success in South Africa back in 2010.
