In demand Gary Rowett linked with both Derby County and Norwich Cityby Jack Kitson / 13 March 2017, 09:31Tweet
Gary Rowett could be on the cusp of ending his three-month spell in the wilderness after he emerged as the short-priced 1/8 favourite to return to the dugout with Derby County.
The former Birmingham City boss was instantly installed as the favourite for the Rams job following Steve McClaren’s sacking on Sunday night, however it’s worth remembering that the in demand manager has been the frontrunner for a fair few posts ever since his shock departure from the Blues back in December.
Rowett’s Birmingham were up in 7th when he was surprisingly axed, and that controversial decision has proved to be a catastrophically bad one for the Midlands club, who have since sunk to 17th with just two wins in 16 under Gianfranco Zola.
Rowett has been linked with the likes of Swansea, Hull, Nottingham Forest Leicester, Norwich, and now Derby who have said they’ll make an announcement in the next 48 hours regarding who will replace McClaren. Whether the 43-year-old will end his mini-hiatus is unknown, but at 1/8 he seems nailed on…famous last words.
Norwich, who axed Alex Neil on Friday, are also believed to be keen on Rowett who can be backed at 8/1 in that particular market, however it’s former Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew who currently tops the betting.
At the time of writing Norwich (9th) and Derby (10th) are separated by just two points in the Championship, but their respective rotten runs means that the play-offs are now unlikely, although not entirely out of the question.
