Israel bound Steve McClaren will not become a Jam Tart at Heartsby Jack Kitson / 16 August 2017, 12:18Tweet
Steve McClaren has broken Hearts on Tynecastle after being ruled out of the running for the Jam Tarts vacancy.
Instead the “Wally with the Brolly” instead surprisingly prepares to jet off to Israel in order to take up a consultant's role at Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he will work alongside the club’s sporting director Jordi Cruyff.
That's some turn of events.
McClaren had been hotly linked with Hearts ever since Ian Cathro was given the boot on the eve of the new SPL season. The former England gaffer had shown real interest in replacing his former Newcastle assistant at the Edinburgh club, but a shock move to Israel now appears the next point of call for the ex-Derby boss.
The trio of Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley and Dougie Freedman remain in the frame for the Hearts post, as does the club’s director of football Craig Levein. Meanwhile, the duo of Fabrizio Ravanelli and Edgar Davids, who are both keen on the job, aren’t thought to be in contention.
John Daly remains in interim charge of Hearts. The club’s under-20 gaffer has recovered from the opening day 4-1 hammering at Celtic with a 1-0 win at Kilmarnock, while he’s expected to still be at the helm for Saturday’s clash at Rangers, although he’s a 20/1 long-shot for the permanent job. However, a win at Ibrox could throw him into contention.
