Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom joint favourite for Nottingham Forest jobby Jack Kitson / 18 January 2017, 11:46Tweet
Betting markets can be notoriously wayward at times and Barnsley supporters will be hoping that this is the case in the Next Nottingham Forest Manager market after their boss Paul Heckingbottom moved into contention for the Reds vacancy.
Heckingbottom entered in the frame on Tuesday at 12/1, only to slide down to 4/1 come the evening.
But, this morning (Wednesday) the 39-year-old finds himself as the joint 3/1 favourite, alongside Billy Davies, to replace Philippe Montanier at Forest.
Heckingbottom memorably led Barnsley, as caretaker manager, to a stunning double last term - Football League Trophy glory and promotion up to the Championship - before then being rewarded with the permanent job in June.
Under a limited budget Heckingbottom’s Tykes side are currently up in 10th in the second-tier, seven points off the top-6, whereas there is a considerable 14-point gap between the club and the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, the Yorkshire outfit are 10 places and 11 points above struggling Forest who are only three points above the drop zone after going seven matches without a win, which led to Montanier’s departure last weekend.
The controversial and trigger-happy nature of the widely disliked Forest owner Fawaz Al Hasawi means that a number of the early contenders - Davies, Gary Rowett and Ryan Giggs - are reportedly not interested in the position.
Elsewhere, the 4/1 priced Red Bull Salzburg boss Oscar Garcia has been contacted by Forest, while the caretaker duo of Jack Lester and Gary Brazil remain in the frame at 12/1 and 14/1 respectively.
