Shrewsbury Town hope to have a new manager in place before Saturday's match at home to Northampton, with Kenny Jackett currently the 2/1 favourite in the betting.

The Shrews have been on the hunt for a new boss for nearly a fortnight, but have yet to find a replacement for Micky Mellon, who surprisingly departed the League One strugglers for National Conference outfit Tranmere Rovers.

According to the Shropshire Star Salop have whittled down their search to four to five candidates, and are now keen to have a new man in the dugout by the weekend.

At the time of writing Jackett leads the betting after his odds were cut from 6/1 down to evens on Monday, although the former Wolves boss has since drifted ever so slightly to 2/1.

Jackett has been out of action since his harsh dismissal by the new Wolves owners back in July, but over the weekend he revealed to Football on 5 that he's looking forward to returning to the game. The 54-year-old also said that he's open minded as to where his next job will be, indicating that he doesn't mind working outside of the Championship (see video below).

Meanwhile, other names in the betting include former Inverness manager John Hughes (3/1), Morecambe boss Jim Bentley (6/1), Wolves first-team coach Rob Edwards (8/1), while the recently out-of-work Alex Rae, who left St Mirren last month, can be backed at 16/1.

Tonight (Tuesday) 23rd-placed Shrewsbury are in action at home to high-flying Sheffield United. It's fair to say that the teams are experiencing a contrasting run of form, with the hosts without a win in seven games, while the Blades have accumulated 20 points from their last eight matches.
