Aitor Karanka propelled to the top of the Sack Race

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has been installed as the new favourite in the Premier League Sack Race following the savage sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

On Thursday night Ranieri became the fifth top-flight casualty of the season after Leicester City ejected the Italian from his hot-seat just nine months after he led the club to the greatest moment in their history.

Karanka, of course, has himself flirted with the sack this season, but Middlesbrough have so far remained loyal to the man who steered them up to the Premier League last term.

At the time of writing Boro are enduring the third worst winless run in the top-4 tiers of English football (and worst in the top-flight), having failed to record a single victory in eight league games dating back to mid-December.

Since that comprehensive 3-0 win over Swansea Karanka’s men have registered only four points, scoring just three goals during that miserable run, leaving the club two points and two places above the relegation zone in 16th.

19 goals in 25 games is simply unacceptable, but while their defence has been solid, they’ve simply got to start shining in attack otherwise they will suffer an immediate return to the Championship.

On Saturday Karanka’s Boro travel down to the capital for a crunch clash with relegation rivals Crystal Palace, who are currently down in 19th having won only one of their eight league matches under Sam Allardyce, who has never been relegated...

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is next in the running for the chop at 5/1, followed by Sunderland’s David Moyes at 6/1, then Watford’s Walter Mazzarri at 8/1.
