Axed Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal shock favourite for Swansea post

Only in the world of football management would a manager be sacked by a miss-performing Championship club, then swiftly emerge as the scorching hot favourite for a Premier League post.

That is exactly what's happened to Carlos Carvalhal who exited Sheffield Wednesday on Christmas Eve, and now a few days later finds himself as the shock odds-on frontrunner to replace Paul Clement at Swansea.

It may have just been a coincidence that the Portuguese gaffer was spotted in the stands during Liverpool's 5-0 demolition of the sorry Swans, but we find this unlikely.

The struggling Welsh outfit are rooted to the foot of the top-flight - five points adrift of safety - after registering just three wins and 13 points from 20 matches.

Clement was axed before the Anfield annihilation, with Swansea legend Leon Britton placed in caretaker charge for the fixture. The coach stated beforehand that he wasn't ready for the permanent position and his mindset is unlikely to have shifted following the heavy defeat.

Former Swans boss Garry Monk, who was axed by Middlesbrough last weekend, had emerged as a contender for the job, as did Slaven Bilic and Frank de Boer. However, their prices have all drifted after Carvalhal stormed to the summit of the market - he's now priced at just 1/5 in the betting.

Carvalhal has previously managed a whole host of clubs including Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon, but has no zero Premier League experience, although he twice came close to leading the Owls into the division, only to falter in the play-offs both times.

Swansea are next in action away to Watford on Saturday.
