Southend boss Chris Powell in shock switch back to Charltonby Jack Kitson / 29 March 2018, 12:53Tweet
Just when it looked liked Harry Kewell was on the cusp of switching Crawley Town for Charlton, in rockets Chris Powell to throw a spanner in the works.
Charlton lost boss Karl Robinson to Oxford last week, but then appeared to be on the verge of snatching an employed manager themselves, with Crawley boss Kewell cut to as short as 1/8 in the Next Charlton Manager Market.
However, on Thursday morning Powell’s name made a surprise appearance in the upper echelons of the betting at just 2/1, in from 25/1.
Powell began his managerial career at Charlton seven years ago. The former Addicks player replaced Phil Parkinson at the helm, then led the club into the Championship after lifting the League One title. An impressive 9th place finish followed, but he was then sacked the following season with his troops rock bottom of the table.
Powell returned to management a few months later with Huddersfield Town, where he spent just over a year, while he’s been in charge of Southend since January 2018: winning five, drawing four and losing only one of his 10 games to date.
Southend’s impressive form may well have caught the eye of his managerless former club, but whether Powell would suddenly make the move back to The Valley is open to debate.
Kewell remains the hot odds-on favourite for the post at 1/4, while caretaker Lee Bowyer can currently be backed at around 8/1. Bowyer enjoyed a winning start last weekend, and will be targeting another triumph on Friday when he takes the Red Army to Northampton.
