Aston Villa Sack Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo has become the first Championship casualty of the campaign after Aston Villa pulled the trigger.

The Italian lasted just 122 days in the dugout, winning only one of his 12 league and cup games in charge, with Saturday's dismal defeat at Preston proving to be the final straw.

After splashing out £50m in the transfer market Di Matteo's Villa began the season as the second favourites for promotion, behind Newcastle. However, after just registering a single league victory, the former Chelsea boss has been sent packing just four months at the helm.

Di Matteo, who famously hoisted the Champions League with Chelsea, paid the ultimate price for Villa's failure to convert draws into wins.

Despite taking the lead in numerous matches the Midlands club frustratingly failed to see games out, leaking in many late goals, which rapidly created a nervous atmosphere in the latter stages of games.

Steve Clarke has been placed in caretaker charge of Villa while the club searches for a new gaffer. At this early stage it's the likes of Steve Bruce, Sam Allardyce, Steve McClaren, Clarke and David Wagner who all feature in the Next Aston Villa Manager Market.
