Real Sociedad target Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez as their new manager

Watch out Newcastle United fans your manager is a wanted man!

According to recent reports La Liga outfit Real Sociedad are eager to lure Rafa Benitez back to Spain as their new manager (Daily Mirror).

Last month the Basque side sacked boss Eusebio Sacristan following a 2-1 defeat at home to Getafe, which was the club’s eighth league loss of 2018.

Sacristan, who had been in charge since November 2015, had previously led Sociedad to 6th spot and into the Europa League.

After Sacristan’s exit the club appointed Imanol Alguacil until the end of the season. The Spaniard went on to draw his first game away to Eibar, while he now has eight more matches to try and improve on the club’s current standing of 15th.

Then come the summer Real Sociedad are plotting a move forĀ former Real Madrid boss Benitez, who previously led Valencia to two La Liga titles in three seasons, plus UEFA Cup glory.

Benitez’s current club Newcastle were previously flirting dangerously with an immediate return to the Championship, however they’ve enjoyed a decent run of form of late, suffering just the one defeat in seven outings.

The Toon beat relegation rivals Southampton and Huddersfield either side of the international break to move seven points clear of the dropĀ zone with seven games to play.

In truth it’s difficult to envision Benitez leaving Newcastle for Real Sociedad, however should a “bigger club” come calling, either in England or Europe, his loyalty would be put to the test.

Obviously a lot will depend on what resources Benitez is offered in the summer. If he’s not handed the finances to bolster his squad, then a departure would seem inevitable.

Should Benitez actually leave St James’ Park, Newcastle fans may not be too inspired by the current leader in the Next Newcastle Manager Market, Mark Hughes, while the likes of Michael O’Neill, Martin O’Neill, Slaven Bilic and Garry Monk also feature in the betting.
