Garry Monk favourite to replace Paul Heckingbottom at Barnsley

Barnsley are today (Tuesday) set to lose their boss Paul Heckingbottom to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United, just days after the 40-year-old signed a new contract with the Tykes.

Heckingbottom is a highly-rated young manager who has done a fantastic job at Barnsley, with whom he led to Football League Trophy glory and promotion up to the Championship within months of taking caretaker charge of the Reds, before preserving the club’s second-tier status with a 14th-placed finish last season.

Heckingbottom will undoubtedly be missed at Barnsley, but the club must now turn their attention to his successor in the Oakwell dugout.

The Next Barnsley Manager Market has reopened its doors and it’s Garry Monk who has been installed as the early favourite to replace Heckingbottom at Oakwell, and judging by the early reaction on social media, he’d be a popular appointment.

Monk is only 38 years old but he’s already held three jobs in the managerial arena.

The first of which was an 18-month spell in the top-flight with Swansea, during which he led the Swans to their highest ever Premier League finish (8th).

Next up was Leeds where he became the club’s most successor manager since their return to the Championship in 2010, leading the Whites to 7th spot with 75 points, averaging 1.63 Points Per Game - click here for more information.

Monk surprisingly left Elland Road after a single season in charge, but returned to the dugout a couple of weeks later with Middlesbrough who were back in the Championship following their relegation from the top-flight.

Boro splashed the cash in the summer and were installed as one of the favourites for promotion, however a mixed first-half of the season resulted in the club sacking Monk two days before Christmas - a decision many viewed as harsh considering the Riverside outfit had just beaten Sheffield Wednesday a few hours earlier.

Monk has since been linked with a number of clubs, including a return to Leeds following the sacking of his successor Thomas Christiansen, however this is now off the cards with Heckingbottom on his way to Elland Road.

So far 75% of Barnsley supporters in our poll would be keen to have the Englishman as their new manager.

The club are accustomed to appointing young gaffers - e.g. Heckingbottom and Lee Johnson - and will no doubt give Monk time, although with just one win in 16 matches he’ll have to conjure up some magic pretty quickly otherwise the club could soon find themselves in the dreaded drop zone.

Other contenders in the betting include Simon Grayson, Uwe Rosler, Michael Appleton and even Marco Silva who is a 16/1 shot for the Tykes job.
