Paul Heckingbottom switches Barnsley for Leeds

by Jack Kitson / 06 February 2018, 12:13

Leeds United have appointed their ninth manager in just four years after luring Paul Heckingbottom over from Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.

Leeds sacked Thomas Christiansen on Sunday after less than eight months in charge.

Steve McClaren was instantly installed as the favourite for the job, with former Leeds boss Simon Grayson also emerging as a contender.

Then, on Monday, Heckingbottom burst into the betting, with bookmakers suspending the Next Leeds United Manager Market in the evening.

Fast-forward to Tuesday morning and Heckingbottom has penned an 18-month contract with Leeds, a period of time which none of the last 10 Whites managers have seen out.

However, Heckingbottom will hope that he’s the man who can finally lead Leeds back into the big time.

The Whites have been absent from the Premier League since 2004, while the current campaign is their eighth straight season trapped in the Championship, with 11 managers failing to win promotion during that time frame.

Heckingbottom leaves Barnsley a point and a place above the second-tier relegation zone in 21st following a difficult season, during which they’ve only won six of 30 league games.

However, the 40-year-old can leave Oakwell with his head held high having previously led the club back into the Championship, before cementing a 14th-place finish. He also hoisted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy - the club’s first piece of silverware since 1955.

Former Leeds manager Garry Monk has emerged as the early frontrunner to replace Heckingbottom, while Simon Grayson, Uwe Rosler, Michael Appleton, and Marco Silva also featuring in the Next Barnsley Manager Market.
