Macclesfield Town are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Brian Horton. The 63-year-old replaced Gary Simpson in March on a short-term deal until the end of the season, however, after failing to save The Silkmen from relegation down to League Two he has been axed. The club have confirmed that assistant manager Glyn Chamberlain will take charge for their final match of the season away to Southend.
Macclesfield will play their football in the Blue Square Bet Premier next season after their relegation from League Two was confirmed on Saturday when they lost 2-0 at home to Burton. Horton, who previously managed the club between 2004 and 2006, picked up just two points in his eight games in charge, which extends the club’s torrid winless streak to an unbelievable 22 matches, with their last victory coming way back on New Year’s Eve.
Macclesfield vice chairman Andy Scott has revealed that they are after an experienced manager who has what it takes to orchestrate an instant return to League Two. The Next Macclesfield Town Manager market is predictably tight at this early stage but it is Kidderminster Harriers Steve Burr and former boss Gary Simpson who lead the way. Other contenders include former Morecambe boss Sammy Mcilroy and the ex Rotherham gaffer Andy Scott.
Macclesfield go in search of their first win of the year when they travel to Southend on Saturday. However, it will be a difficult task considering that their opponents are gunning for a win that could see them clinch an automatic promotion spot. Stan James have Southend priced as the odds-on 1/4 favourites, with Macclesfield handed long odds of 12/1 to bow out of League Two with a surprise win. Meanwhile a draw is available at 4/1.
