Alex McLeish was appointed manager of Aston Villa on 17th June 2011 after a period of heavy speculation. The move was controversial as McLeish was, until a week before, manager of Villa’s local rivals Birmingham City. The Scot is Villa’s third manager in a year, following the departures of Martin O’Neill last August and Gerard Houllier at the start of June 2011.

Recent Manager History

Aston Villa have seen nine Managers come and go since the turn of the century as they have looked to compete with the more successful clubs in the Premier League. At times this has proven unsettling and results haven’t laways gone the way they wanted. Martin O’Neill was largely credited for making the club a real force again and it was therefore a huge surprise when he quit the club before the start of the 2010/11 season. During his time at Villa Park O’Neill established the club as a top 6 side and also took them to the Carling Cup Final in 2010.

After O’Neill left Villa appointed Gérard Houllier who only lasted one season due to ill health. After being linked with the likes of Steve McClaren and Roberto Martinez during summer 2011 Villa controversially appointed the Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish on 17th June.
