The team is currently managed by the Italian and former head coach of the Italian national side Giovanni Trapattoni who has been in charge of the Republic side since 1st May 2008, along with his assistant Marco Tardelli.
Trapattoni successfully guided Ireland through a Euro 2012 play-off with Estonia which means his popularity has never been higher. Ireland were the big favourites to qualify and if they had failed to make it to the Finals next summer then Trapaottoni would have been be in real trouble. Instead there are now talks to extend his contract.
