Reading named Nigel Adkins as their new manager, with the former Southampton boss replacing the sacked Brian McDermott. The club decided that a change was needed in order to halt the rot and boost their chances of avoiding an instant return to the Championship. However, there was little Adkins could do and he will now aim to get them back in the top flight next season.

Reading won the Championship in fine style back in 2006, finishing a whopping 16 points clear of second placed Sheffield United and 25 points ahead of third placed Watford. In their first season in the Premier League Reading surprised everyone with an impressive eighth place finish. However, they were unable to repeat this feat and were relegated on goal difference in 2008.

Reading dropped down to the Championship in 2008 and experienced heartbreak in 2009 and 2011 when they lost out in the play-offs. They returned in 2012 but lasted just a year in the top flight.
