2017/18 League Two Preview: Rossi Eames and Barnet

Mike Holden (@Ratings_Mike) previews Rossi Eames and BarnetĀ ahead of the upcoming 2017/18 League Two season.

Rossi Eames takes sole charge of the Bees after stepping in as joint-caretaker with Henry Newman following Martin Allen’s shock departure last December. The pair did a reasonable job, winning five out of 12 matches, but were stood down for the incoming Kevin Nugent in mid-February. It was a verdict Newman evidently wasn’t pleased with and he walked away, but Eames stayed loyal and got his reward when Nugent had a shocker, guiding the Bees to just one win in 11 matches.

It’s too early to cast any definitive judgements about Eames’ leadership style and temperament, mainly because his initial involvement last season was a joint effort. But his focus in pre-season appears to be on collective endeavour more than indulging any individual brilliance and he has openly expressed his desire to make Barnet the fittest team in the division out of possession. Balance is another word that crops continually in his assessments, which implies that Eames works a plan more than reacts to what the job throws at him.

There’s mounting speculation about the future of John Akinde and his departure in August feels inevitable. That might be a blessing in disguise for Eames long term and his holistic philosophy, even more so if he gets his hands on some of the money, but the absence of a guaranteed 20 goals is going to take some getting used to. Looking back on last season, fate was kind and the Bees had an uncanny trend of beating teams just before they got their act together. They might struggle.

Prediction: bottom half
