Pep Guardiola gunning to make history in third season at Man City

Pep Guardiola has history in his sights as he bids to lead Manchester City to back-to-back top-flight titles for the first time ever.

The Citizens manager is currently preparing to enter into his third campaign at the Etihad. In his first year he surprisingly finished empty-handed, but then stormed back to hoist the Premier League trophy in record-breaking fashion, and now he’s gunning to become the first back-to-back title-winning manager since Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

In fact, only five managers have successfully retained the top-flight crown since the hazy days of 1950.

We’ve had the aforementioned Fergie, a fellow Sir in Matt Busby, Jose Mourinho, Bob Paisley and Stan Cullis - an exclusive band of bosses which perhaps surprisingly doesn’t include the likes of Bill Shankly, Arsene Wenger, Brian Clough, and Kenny Dalglish.

10 managerial predictions for the 2018/19 Premier League season

Guardiola’s men head into the new season as the bookmakers' favourites in the betting as the Spaniard attempts to make it league title number eight as a manager - he’s won three at each of Barcelona and Bayern Munich - and the fourth gaffer to win the Premier League more than once since its inauguration in 1992/93.

"It will be tough but last season was tough,” said Guardiola ahead of the new season.

“Everybody speaks about Liverpool but there's Manchester United and Chelsea, who I think will sign players. If they can keep Eden Hazard and then there's Tottenham who have had the same manager for a while.

“Arsenal I think are going to be more consistent as a team. It will be tough like it has to be. It's nice because every season the Premier League is tougher and tougher."

His closest challenger, in the betting at least, is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who is attempting to lift the Reds their first league title since 1989/90, which came under Dalglish.

Next in the running is Jose Mourinho who is aiming for Premier League trophy number four, although he cut an extremely frustrated figure after failing to bring in any new additions on Deadline Day.
