Brendan Rodgers dragged back into the Sack Race after Champions League failureby Jack Kitson / 10 December 2014, 09:02Tweet
Bookmakers Sky Bet have shredded Brendan Rodgers' odds from 20/1 down to just 4/1 in the Premier League Sack Race after Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League. The Reds could only draw 1-1 at home to Group B rivals FC Basel, meaning they flopped out in the group stages with a meagre tally of five points from six matches. As a result the under-fire Rodgers is now the second favourite for the chop behind Leicester City's Nigel Pearson.
The painfully disappointing result capped what has been an extremely poor four months for the club. Liverpool have frustratingly failed to live up to the stunning heights of last season, with their expected title challenge never materialising. Saturday's goalless draw at home to Sunderland leaves the Reds down in 9th, six points adrift of the top-4, and a staggering 15 points off the pace of league-leaders Chelsea. On top of that the Merseyside outfit have already lost the same amount of top-flight matches as they did the whole of the previous campaign.
Rodgers, who signed a new long-term four-year contract during the summer, is deep in the midst of his most ardouus spell in charge of Liverpool, as numerous supporters savagely call for his head on social media, with last season's achievements quickly forgotten. Up next for the Reds are two titanic back-to-back leagues games against Man Utd and Arsenal (with a League Cup match against Bournemouth sandwiched in between) in what could prove to be make or break for the Ulsterman.
