Worthington Northern Ireland Future In The Balance

Paul Smith by Paul Smith / 11 December 2009, 09:41

It is being widely reported today that the future of Nigel Worthington as the boss of Northern Ireland is hanging in the balance after the latest round of contract talks stalled, the former Norwich Manager is widely considered to have done a good job at Windsor Park despite the team missing out on qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Worthington's current contract only runs to the end of the year and with talks going no where it is looking increasingly unlikely that he will remain at the helm for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers, it may well be that he desires a return to club Management as it is unlikely he would be short of suitors.

Northern Ireland had a decent qualifying campaign for the World Cup, they were still in with a chance of qualifying right until the last round of games but ultimately missed out by a narrow margin, all of the signs from both parties since then have been positive so this story does come as somewhat of a surprise. Worthington is a a well respected Manager having led Norwich City to the Premier League a few years back and there are likely to be one or two Championship clubs monitoring the situation cloesly waiting to swoop over the coming days and weeks.

VC Bethave been watching this story closely and they have opened up a Next Northern Ireland Manager Odds market in reaction to the news and there are already some interesting names in the frame with several former internationals high up in the betting. Heading up the market at this stage are Lawrie Sanchez and Gerry Armstrong who are vying for favouritism, it would be interesting to see Sanchez back in charge after only leaving the job in 2007 after three years in charge.

One interesting candidate at this stage the Sack Race believes is former player Jim Magilton who is currently having his troubles at QPR and could well be in the market for a new job in the near future, he is a tough character who may relish the chance of leading his country to a European Championship and is would most likely be a popular choice with the fans. Of course all of this depends on the future of Nigel Worthington which is set to be decided over the coming weeks with several Manager waiting to pounce on his job if he moves on.
