Fleetwood Town caught us all by surprise last Monday when they made the announcement that Joey Barton had departed the club.
A week has now jetted by, so we’ve taken a closer look at the latest developments in the hunt for Barton’s successor.

Who is the favourite?
The odds-on Aussie, who is taking his UEFA Pro Licence and has worked at Everton’s academy, is seeking his first job in management.
There’s been a growing trend in Football League clubs giving young, rookie managers a chance to thrive meaning Cahill could soon step into the dugout.
So while he doesn’t have any senior managerial experience on his CV yet, neither did Barton.
Opportunity knocks for Simon Wiles?
Little is known about Fleetwood’s “different direction” approach - as said by chairman Andy Pilley in a tweet - however, if the League One club do want to go down the novice path once again, then they may not have to look any further than within their own ranks.
Step forward Simon Wiles, 6/4, who has been promoted from the club's academy into the interim head coach position.
Fleetwood return to action on Tuesday - away to Hull in the cup - for the first time since since Boxing Day, so if Wiles enjoys a positive start as caretaker then he’ll do his own chances no harm.
What about Chris Beech?
Chris Beech has featured in the upper echelons of the Fleetwood - his home town - market ever since Barton departed last week.
While it’s great to see Beech get recognition for his work at Carlisle - read why he’s one of our managers of 2020 - fans will be nervous at the new exposure that comes alongside this.
But while Beech is currently the third favourite (8/1) in the betting, the boss’ recent comments are likely to soothe the nerves of the Carlisle faithful:
"I’m attached to this journey we’ve started,” he told the club’s official website. “I love working for Carlisle and I feel very attached to what we’re doing. I was aware of the rumours, but there’s no headline for you on that one.”
Meanwhile, Danny Cowley is now out at 16/1 while former Fleetwood coach Nathan Rooney is a 25/1 outsider - you can check out our interview with the Colne manager right here.
What next for Barton?
As for Barton, he can look back on an impressive managerial debut at Fleetwood, with whom he led into the play-offs last season.
He’s already been hotly linked with an instant return to management with Sheffield Wednesday, however he’s just recently drifted out to 16/1, Paul Cook is once again the favourite for the Owls job.
Meanwhile, Barton is a 25/1 outside for the Port Vale post, which opened up last Monday.
