Reading Sack Brian McDermottby Jack Kitson / 11 March 2013, 18:01Tweet
Brian McDermott has paid the price for Reading's recent poor run of form, with the popular boss becoming the fourth top flight manager to be sacked this season. McDermott had long odds of 20/1 with Sky Bet in the Premier League Sack Race earlier today (Monday) but Reading's owners have decided that a change was needed in order to boost their chances of survival. The club have also revealed that they will look to appoint a replacement as soon as possible.
McDermott took charge of the Royals back in late 2009. Last season he led them to the Championship title following a remarkable run of form in the second-half of the campaign.
However, the club have since struggled on their return to the Premier League and are currently second from bottom and four points adrift of safety, having won just five of their 29 games this season. A Reading revival appeared to be taking place at the start of 2013, with the club taking 10 points from 12 games. But four consecutive defeats, including Saturday’s dismal 2-1 loss at home to relegation rivals Aston Villa, has made them the favourites for the dreaded drop.
At this early stage in proceedings the likes of Nigel Adkins, Paolo Di Canio and Roberto Di Matteo have been touted as potential replacements in the Next Reading Manager Market. Meanwhile other names in the frame include Stuart Pearce and Alan Curbishley.
