Mitchell van der Gaag set for Motherwell jobby Jack Kitson / 12 December 2014, 09:18Tweet
The Next Motherwell Manager Odds have taken another twist as Mitchell van der Gaag emerges as the hot odds-on favourite for the SPL job. The ex-Steelman now leads the way at the top of the Fir Park market after former Well boss Terry Butcher pulled out of the running, and now according to reports, Van der Gaag could even be unveiled as the club's new boss at some point today (Friday).
The news will come as surprise to many fans who were expecting Butcher to return to the club for a second spell. The 55-year-old was the odds-on frontrunner in the betting to succeed Stuart McCall, however on Thursday he abruptly ruled himself of contention; a hammer blow to numerous supporters.
Van der Gaag previously played for Motherwell as a defender between 1995-97, during which he scored eight goals in 42 appearances, before leaving to play for the likes of Utrecht, Maritimo and Al-Nassr. The Dutchman's first managerial position came at Potuguese Segunda Liga side Maritimo B in 2008, before upgrading and taking charge of the main squad a year later, with whom he took into the Europa League.
After a two year break Van der Gaag returned to the dugout in 2012 with C.F.Os Belenenses and led them to promotion to the Portuguese top-flight, however after one year he was forced to step down due to health reasons.
