Mark Venus eager for permanent Middlesbrough jobby Jack Kitson / 12 November 2013, 10:06Tweet
Caretaker boss Mark Venus remains in the frame to take the Middlesbrough job on a permanent basis despite Jose Mourinho’s former assistant, Aitor Karanka, once again emerging as a major contender in the betting. Venus has been in charge of Boro since the club sacked Tony Mowbray last month and on Saturday stated his intent to continue running the first team.
Venus has recorded a respectable four points from three games in charge, which included a 2-2 draw against Watford at the weekend. However, a disappointing start to the season means that the Riverside club remain down in 16th in the Championship and eight places adrift of the top-six. 46-year-old Venus was previously reluctant to be drawn on the job but has now officially thrown his name into the ring.
Boro Chairman Steve Gibson has so far refused to be rushed into appointing a new manager, although he will now no doubt be keen to make a decision during the international break. Venus can currently be found at 7/2 with Sky Bet in the Next Middlesbrough Manager Market, while Aitor Karanka - who is also hotly linked with managerless Crystal Palace - is the narrow 7/4 favourite. Elsewhere Stuart Pearce and Fabrizio Ravanelli remain in the mix at 7/1.
