Richie Wellens to replace Phil Brown? Swindon Town eye up swift appointment

Richie Wellens has emerged as the scorching hot favourite to replace Phil Brown at Swindon Town after the latter was given his marching orders on Sunday night with the club 17th in League Two.

Brown’s men had endured a poor start to the current campaign, winning only five of their opening 17 matches, leaving the club seven points adrift of the top-seven, and a whopping 10 points off the automatic promotion places.
On the plus side - sort of - Brown left his position on a winning note after Swindon scraped past non-league York City in the FA Cup over the weekend, although a first win in two months wasn’t enough for the 59-year-old, or his assistant Neil MacDonald, to keep their jobs at the County Ground.
As a result the Robins are on the search for their third manager in just nine months, and if the betting is to be believed then the club may possibly have found their man in Wellens, who is priced at just 1/5 with one bookmaker.
The former Oldham manager led the Latics between September 2017 and June 2018, winning 14 of his 43 matches, but the club lost their League One status at the end of the season which resulted in the 38-year-old’s dismissal last summer.
Former Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer, who back in early August became the first manager to leave this season, features in the betting as do the likes of Darren Ferguson, Kevin Nolan and Mick McCarthy, while ex-Swindon gaffer Paolo Di Canio is a cheeky outside punt at 25/1.
