Peter Schmeichel shock contender for Carlisle United vacancyby Jack Kitson / 12 September 2013, 10:11Tweet
Peter Schmeichel has emerged as a shock contender for the Carlisle United job. The goalkeeping legend can be found at a best-priced 8/1 with Stan James to take his first steps into management with the struggling League One club, who sacked Greg Abbott on Monday.
Schmeichel won a plethora of honours during a hugely successful playing career spanning over 20 years. The 49-year-old developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world at Manchester United, with whom he helped win 15 trophies, including five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a prized Champions League. Despite his lack of managerial experience many Carlisle supporters would no doubt love to see the Danish icon at their club, but whether he is interested in the role is so far unknown.
In the aftermath of Abbott's departure the club's assistant manager Graham Kavanagh emerged as the early favourite in the Next Carlisle Manager Market, however he has since been replaced at the top of the pile by Paul Simpson and most recently Glenn Roeder. In the last 24 hours Bet Victor have slashed Roeder's odds from 66/1 to just 3/1 as he becomes the leading contender to replace Abbott. The former West Ham and Newcastle boss has been out of the public eye since getting sacked my Norwich in 2009 but could now be set to make a return to the dugout. Meanwhile Simpson and Kavanagh are now both available at 5/1.
