Dan Petrescu shock contender for Crystal Palace jobby Jack Kitson / 13 November 2013, 10:45Tweet
Crystal Palace suffered a huge blow this week after losing out on target Aitor Karanka to Championship side Middlesbrough. Reports were rife that Jose Mourinho's highly hated former assistant was set to take charge of the Eagles but in the end he surprisingly decided to kick-off his managerial career at the Teesiders, who are 16th in the second-tier.
Palace will no doubt be wounded by the shock shun but will have to quickly move on if they are to appoint a new boss before the end of the international break. Former favourite Rene Meulensteen has returned to the top of the Next Crystal Palace Manager Betting, with Sky Bet pricing Sir Alex Ferguson's former No.2 at just 11/8.
Meanwhile Dan Petrescu has emerged as a shock contender for the vacancy as Bet365 slash his odds from 40/1 to just 3/1 in the betting. The former Chelsea star is currently in charge of Dinamo Moscow but is believed to be keen to make his mark in the Premier League. The 45-year-old started his managerial career back in 2003 with Sportul Studentesc and has since gone on to work with a number of clubs in his homeland, as well as Poland and Russia.
According to reports Petrescu has already held talks with managerless Palace, although nothing is certain. Elsewhere 20/1 long shot Ian Dowie has been linked with a return to the London outfit, while other names worth keeping an eye on include Tony Pulis, Karl Robinson and Alex McLeish.
