Gary Caldwell linked with Wigan Athletic return after John Sheridan leaves for Swindon Town

Wigan Athletic have been left managerless for the second time in four months after John Sheridan left to take charge of Swindon Town; his fourth job of the year.

Sheridan had only replaced Paul Cook in September - on a month-to-month contract - but after 15 games spanning two months he’s become the new manager of Swindon, who sit two points above the Latics in the League One table.

In a statement on the club's website Dean Watson, speaking on behalf of the Joint Administrators, said:

“We would like to place on record our thanks to John for his efforts during the last two months and wish him well in his future career.”

Wigan, who remain in administration, are currently rock-bottom of League One with seven points from 11 matches.

In terms of the direction the club could take next, Wigan Today reports:

“With the proposed takeover by a Spanish group fronted by Jose Miguel Garrido Cristo still with the EFL, Wigan Today understands the club will not be seeking a new full-time manager in the meantime”

It’s therefore perhaps not too much of a surprise to see Leam Richardson feature at the top of the next Wigan manager market. Richardson filled in after Cook departed in the summer, and is now likely to do the same again given the club’s delicate financial situation.

However, one name that will catch attention in the betting is the club’s former title-winning manager Gary Caldwell, who is not only available for hire, but also reportedly keen to return to the club, as reported by Paul Kendrick.

Could a return be on the cards?

Caldwell was sacked by Wigan in 2016, five months after lifting the League One title. He’s since managed Chesterfield and Partick Thistle but has been out-of-work for the last year.

Providing he’s happy to accept a short-term deal, the 38-year-old could soon be back in familiar surroundings.

Other names that feature in the betting at the time of writing include Steve Cotterill, Graham Alexander, Sol Campbell and Paul Tisdale.
