Tony Adams slams Arsenal boss Unai Emery

Unai Emery suffered a comprehensive 2-0 defeat at home to Pep Guardiola in his eagerly anticipated first Arsenal match since succeeding Arsene Wenger.

Gunners fans headed into the game with a new found sense of optimism, however the loss showed that the club still has a long way to go until Emery’s men are ready to mount a title charge.

But, it’s important to remember that we are only one game into the new season, and there’s still 37 top-flight fixtures to be played, although this hasn’t stopped Arsenal legend Tony Adams from laying into Emery.

Adams, who lost all seven games in his last managerial spell at Granada, told talkSPORT:

“It was the same kind of performance. I was a little bit deflated and disappointed.

“Coming from Arsene who always played open attacking football, I really wanted the new manager to come in there and tighten things up.

“For the last ten years now – (we’ve been) leaking goals, soft away from home.

“I wanted him to put his new goalkeeper in, work with his back four, have two screening central-midfield players, and keep a clean sheet. It was crying out for it. But I didn’t see that.”

Adams then went on to say:

"I don’t know what he’s been doing for the last six weeks."

While it’s never nice to be criticised by one of the club’s greats, it’s unlikely Emery will be too concerned given Adams’ own managerial record.

The 51-year-old has been unable to make the transition from player to manager, having suffered relegation with Wycombe, registered just 10 points from 16 games at Portsmouth, while he failed to record a single point during his time in charge of Granada.
