Southampton set to appoint Mark Hughes as Mauricio Pellegrino's replacement

Southampton are today (Wednesday) set to appoint Mark Hughes as their new manager following Monday’s sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino.

Hughes made 60 appearances for the Saints in all competitions at the end of the 1990s - under Dave Jones then Glenn Hoddle - and is now expected to return to the club on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The Welshman went on to play for Blackburn and Everton before opting to hang up his boots and channel his focus on managing the Wales national team. He went on to take up his first Premier League job with Rovers in 2004, and has since managed Man City, Fulham, QPR, and most recently Stoke, who sacked him earlier this year.

In five jobs spanning 14 years managing in the top-flight Hughes has never been relegated, although QPR went down the season he was sacked, while struggling Stoke (19th) could well be heading for the same fate this term.

Should, as expected, Hughes now be named as the new Saints boss his unblemished relegation record will be put to the test, with the south coast side one point and one place above the relegation zone with eight games to go.

The Hampshire outfit have won only five league games all season, while they’ve only recorded one victory from their last 17 top-flight games, with last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle proving to be Pellegrino's final game.

However, Hughes’ immediate focus will be leading the Saints through to the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday when they make the trip to League One outfit Wigan, who stunned Man City in the previous round.
