Iain Dowie Interested In Northern Ireland Manager Vacancyby Jack Kitson / 14 November 2011, 10:47Tweet
Iain Dowie has declared his interest in the vacant Northern Ireland Manager job and as a result has had his odds cut to 7/1 in the betting. The former Northern Ireland star is currently working as a pundit for Sky Sports having been out of management since his brief stint at Hull City at the end of the 2009/10 season. The 46-year-old has a wealth of experience having previously managed the likes of Charlton, QPR, Crystal Palace and Coventry and has described the possibility of managing his country as "an amazing opportunity".
Nigel Worthington resigned back in October following Northern Ireland's failure to qualify for Euro 2012. After a bright start to qualification the Green and White Army's challenge fizzled out and they slumped to four defeats in their final four matches. In the end they finished second from bottom in Group C with just two wins out of 10. They have now failed to qualify for a major championships since the 1986 World Cup and are in desperate need of appointing a manager who can rejuvenate the side and improve their lowly standing of 84 in Fifa's world rankings.
The Irish Football Association will look to appoint a new manager within the next couple of months to enable the chosen candidate to settle before the country's next match, an international friendly against Norway at Windsor Park on February 29th 2012. The betting currently indicates that there are four men in the running for the job with former Northern Ireland player Jim Magilton currently the 11/10 favourite. At the moment Magilton is working as a consultant at Irish club Shamrock Rovers and like Dowie has expressed his interest in the job. Brian Kerr is next in the running with odds of 7/4 while Shamrock Rovers manager Michael O'Neill, who is also linked with Hibernian, is available at 7/2. Outside bets include the former Northern Ireland managers Lawrie Sanchez and Sammy McIlroy who have odds of 16/1 and 40/1 respectively.
