Birmingham City make a swift appointment in Gianfranco Zolaby Jack Kitson / 15 December 2016, 09:20Tweet
Birmingham City have made a swift appointment in Gianfranco Zola who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to replace Gary Rowett at St Andrew's.
The Blues harshly axed Rowett early on Wednesday afternoon much to the confusion of fans, who vented their outrage on social media.
Then, shortly after 7pm, the Championship club had already found the 42-year-old’s successor in former Watford and West Ham boss Zola, who had been out-of-work since June when he was sacked by Qatari side Al-Arabi after just one campaign at the helm.
Zola had received just 17% of our poll, with former England boss Sam Allardyce getting nearly 50% of the votes. https://t.co/GOiEH40sJw— The Sack Race (@thesackrace) December 14, 2016
Zola has never won promotion in his managerial career, but the Blue owners, Trillion Trophy Asia Limited (TTAL), believe that the Italian can become the first manager to lead to club back up to the Premier League since Alex McLeish in 2008/09.
Zola’s first match in charge is a tricky fixture at home to 2nd-placed Brighton who are enjoying a 15 game unbeaten run, while they’ve only lost to league leaders Newcastle on the road this term.
Meanwhile, it's surely only a matter of time until we see the talented Rowett back in the dugout. So watch this space.
