Five Names In The Frame For The Bristol City Post

Jack Kitson by Jack Kitson / 15 January 2016, 09:53

Steve Cotterill became the 11th Championship casualty of the season on Thursday night after losing his job at Bristol City. The second-tier side had gone six league games without a win, leaving them down in 22nd, while his antics in the aftermath of the club's 2-1 defeat to Preston certainly didn't paint him in a good light (see video).

Below we take a look at the top-5 names in the frame to replace him at Ashton Gate (all odds courtesy of Sky Bet).

Nigel Pearson

  • Odds: 2/1
  • Status: Unemployed
  • Former Clubs: Leicester (x2), Hull, Southampton, Carlisle

Nigel Pearson

Former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson has yet to return to the managerial arena since his controversial sacking in the summer. The 52-year-old has been linked with a multitude of vacancies, both in the Premier League and Championship, but for reasons unknown he has remained in the wilderness. Pearson now finds himself as the early favourite to take the Bristol City post, but whether he has the stomach for a second-tier relegation scrap is open to debate.

Michael Appleton

  • Odds: 3/1
  • Status: Manager of Oxford United
  • Former Clubs: Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Portsmouth

Michael Appleton

Michael Appleton has been in the spotlight of late following Oxford's stunning 3-2 victory over Swansea in the FA Cup third round. The 40-year-old is also enjoying a cracking campaign with the League Two high-flyers, who are currently sitting in the third automatic promotion spot.

As a result Appleton has won a number of plaudits, and it comes as no surprise to see him linked with the Championship vacancy. Jumping up two leagues would no doubt be tempting for the former Portsmouth gaffer, but there is a real possibility that the two clubs will be in the same league next term, given their respective standings.

David Moyes

  • Odds: 6/1
  • Status: Unemployed
  • Former Clubs: Real Sociedad, Man Utd, Everton, Preston

David Moyes

David Moyes returning to Ashton Gate as a manager would be a massive coup for the Robins. The Scot who made over 80 appearances for the club in the 1980s, has been installed as one of the early favourites to make a sensational return. The 52-year-old has been out-of-work since losing his job at Real Sociedad back in November, but he's widely believed to be waiting for a job in the Premier League, and rightly so.

Garry Monk

  • Odds: 10/1
  • Status: Unemployed
  • Former Clubs: Swansea

Garry Monk

Former Swansea boss Garry Monk could prove to be a decent value option at 10/1. The talented young manager, 36, is believed to be keen to leap straight back into the managerial arena, and Bristol City could well be on his radar. Monk led the Swans to an impressive 8th last term with a record points tally, but a disappointing start to this season saw him rather harshly sacked last month.

Paul Tisdale

  • Odds: 18/1
  • Status: Manager of Exeter City
  • Former Clubs: Team Bath

Paul Tisdale

The longest-serving manager in the Football League has continuously been linked with a move away from Exeter City ever since he joined the club way back in 2006, however he has so far remained admirably loyal to the Grecians. Like Appleton, Tisdale hit the headlines last week after his League Two troops held top-flight Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in the cup. The fashion icon will currently be extremely focused on next week's replay at Anfield, meaning Bristol City may have to bide their time if they are to lure him away from St James Park.
