Six In The Mix In Birmingham City Manager Bettingby Mark Cohen / 15 June 2011, 11:30Tweet
Birmingham City have revealed that they have their eye on six potential candidates to replace Alex McLeish as manager, with the likes of Chris Hughton and Steve Cotterill right in the mix. At present the betting is extremely close as a number of managers begin to express their interest in the vacancy. Both the board and City supporters are still fuming at the manner in which McLeish quit the club last weekend and the fact that he is now the leading contender to take charge of their fierce rivals Aston Villa.
Birmingham are keen to install a new manager as soon as possible and Paddy Power currently have the former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton as the 5/6 favourite in the Next Birmingham City Manager Betting. Ex-West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola and Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill are both available at 11/2, while Alan Curbishley has odds of 7/1. Also in the frame are Dave Jones, who was recently sacked by Cardiff City, and the former West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo, who are both priced at 8/1. Although he is not believed to be one of their preferred candidates the former Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies has had his odds slashed in the betting to just 9/2 making him the second favourite behind Hughton.
The chosen replacement will be tasked with leading Birmingham out of the Championship after they were relegated on the final day of the 2010/11 season. However, the club will also be playing in the Europa League next season courtesy of their Carling Cup win in February, which could either be a positive distraction or a hindrance depending on which way you look at it.
Birmingham are the third favourites, behind West Ham and Leicester City, to win the Championship next season and make an instant return to the top flight. Paddy Power have them available at 8/1 to win the league and 9/4 to get promoted.
