Nigel Clough set for Sheffield United hot seatby Jack Kitson / 15 October 2013, 14:51Tweet
According to reports Nigel Clough is expected to be named as David Weir's successor at Bramall Lane within the next 48 hours. If the rumours are true then it will mark a rapid return to the dugout for the 47-year-old who was surprisingly sacked by Championship side Derby at the end of September.
Clough, who can currently be found at just 1/6 (Sky Bet) in the Next Sheff Utd Manager Market, was the fourth longest-serving manager in England up until Derby called time on his four-and-a-half years at Pride Park. However, he now looks set to become United’s seventh permanent manager in just eight seasons. If, as expected, Clough is appointed then his first match will be at home to 12th-placed Port Vale.
The Blades dispensed of Weir last Friday following a dismal start to the season. The ante-post favourites for promotion have failed to win in 10 since the opening day, leaving them marooned at the bottom of League One. Weir was surprisingly handed the job in June but has ultimately struggled in what was his first venture into the ruthless management arena, departing with his tail in between his legs having won just two of his 13 league and cup games.
