Mauricio Pochettino to stay at Southamptonby Jack Kitson / 16 January 2014, 13:25Tweet
It's the news all Southampton supporters will be ecstatic to hear: Mauricio Pochettino is staying at St Mary's. The Argentinean’s future was in severe doubt following the resignation of executive chairman Nicola Cortese on Wednesday, with rumours spreading like wildfire that he was on the brink of calling it quits. However, in another twist he is now set to stay at the south coast club, which will be confirmed in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
As a result expect Pochettino's odds to now drift in the Premier League Sack Race, with the likes of Chris Hughton and Sam Allardyce returning to the top of the betting.
The whole saga erupted on Wednesday after Cortese departed following a bitter dispute with owner Katharina Liebherr, who is intent on becoming more involved in the running of the club. The daughter of Markus Liebherr has since appointed herself as the club’s non-executive chairman and according to reports is now keen to sell the Saints, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
Now that the future of their manager is clear fans will be hoping that the likes of Luke Shaw, skipper Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert will swat away advances from other clubs. The air of uncertainty during the last 24 hours is believed to have upset a number of Saints stars who are reconsidering their futures at the Hampshire side, although Pochettino's decision to stay is likely to prevent any of his prized assets from following Cortese out of the exit door.
