Danny Wilson is the favourite to take over at Barnsley following the departure of Mark Robins. Robins' future at the club had been thrown into doubt last Thursday after he had been placed on notice by the club. After taking some time to consider his future at Oakwell the 41-year-old decided he would be unable to continue under the new financial conditions proposed by the board. Barnsley will now begin the search for their third manager in two years.
Robins replaced Simon Davey as manager of Barnsley in September 2009 and managed to save the club from relegation to League One. This season he bettered the previous years standing by taking the Tykes to a 17th place finish - their highest finish for five years. However, after a disagreement with the board he has chosen to leave the club and is now the favourite to become the next Sheffield United manager after Micky Adams was sacked last week.
The early favourite to become the new Barnsley manager is the ex-Tykes player and manager Danny Wilson, who Victor Chandler have available at 7/2. Wilson joined Barnsley in 1993 as a player, but only a year later he became their player/manager. A couple of years later in 1997 he took Barnsley to the Premier League as Division One runners-up. This was the first time that the club had won promotion to the top division of English football in its 110-year history. Wilson left Barnsley the following year after the club were relegated.
Other candidates in the running to take over at Oakwell include the former MK Dons and West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo who has odds of 5/1, and the former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton who is 8/1 to take over.
