Paolo Di Canio on the rocks at Sunderlandby Jack Kitson / 16 September 2013, 09:26Tweet
The pressure continues to be heaped on the shoulders of the under-fire Paolo Di Canio whose struggling Sunderland side are still without a win this season following their latest defeat to Arsenal. The Black Cats find themselves rock-bottom of the Premier League having picked up just a point from their opening four games.
The Wearside club have failed to gel following a frenzied summer which saw Di Canio make a multitude of new signings while showing a number of players the exit door. A single point was certainly not the return the owners were looking for at this early stage in the campaign and if they don’t unearth that elusive first win soon the former Swindon Town boss will be without a job.
The 45-year-old was sent to the stands during the weekend, which is unsurprisingly not the first time his temperament has been called into question this season. He was heavily criticised recently for publically slating his players, while his training methods have been panned.
The controversial Italian is undoubtedly one of the more colourful managers in the top-flight but if his contentious antics continue - without results - then he could become the first victim of this season's Premier League Sack Race. His odds have continued to plummet with Sky Bet now pricing him at 6/4 to get the chop.
Sunderland now face a crunch class away to fellow strugglers West Brom on Saturday. Similarly to Di Canio's men the Baggies have failed to win a league game this season, picking up two points from their first four games. Both Di Canio and Steve Clarke will view this fixture as a must win and it is sure to be a competitive affair at the Hawthorns.
After their trip to the Midlands Sunderland then face a daunting run of fixtures against Liverpool, Man Utd, Swansea and then a potential decisive Tyne-Wear derby at home to Newcastle at the end of October. Ladbrokes currently have the Black Cats available at 9/5 to get relegated, while they can be found at 7/1 with Coral to claim a top-10 finish.
