Kevin MacDonald Favourite For Aston Villa Job After Opening Day Winby Sean Raymond / 17 August 2010, 09:17Tweet
Kevin MacDonald took temporary charge of Aston Villa last week after the shock departure of Martin O'Neill and after an opening day win he could be ready to take the job on a full-time basis, MacDonald was seen as a stop gap until Randy Lerner could find a bigger name to take the reigns but it is becoming increasingly likely that he will be offered the job for keeps. The players have been singing his praises in recent days and with no obvious favourite for the job it could be that MacDonald gets his big break in management, he has been behind the scenes on the coaching staff at Villa for some time and seems to have the respect of the players which could be crucial as Villa look to maintain their position in the top six.
The bookmakers certainly have been monitoring the Next Aston Villa Manager Odds very closely in recent days and MacDonald has been slashed in recent days and has now taken favouritism in the market, that is a significant move and another couple of wins from MacDonald could well seal his position as the full time Manager. He has already showed a calmness in the role as he led Villa to a 3-0 win over West Ham at Villa Park on Saturday, they were much the better team and he even managed to get James Milner involved despite his impending transfer to Man City.
At the moment though there is no real leading candidate outside of MacDonald which makes him the number 1 choice, Sven Goran Eriksson remains keen but he may not be the most popular choice with the fans despite his experience and ability to attract some big names to the club from across Europe. Bob Bradley continues to mentioned through his link with Randy Lerner but his lack of experience outside of North America makes him a long shot at the moment, with this in mind it is MacDonald that is hard to ignore in the latest betting.
Villa will play Rapid Vienna on Thursday night in a Europa League play-off on Thursday night followed by a trip to St James Park on Thursday in the Premier League, MacDonald will know that another couple of wins in those two games could well all but seal his position as the New Aston Villa Manager.
