There’s making a statement upon your arrival at a new club, and then there’s making a Diego Maradona statement.

The Argentina legend made sure all eyes were on him as he was officially unveiled as the new chairman of Belarusian team Dinamo Brest, having signed a three-year deal with the club back in May.

The 57-year-old, who caused quite the stir at the 2018 World Cup as a FIFA ambassador, was elaborately paraded around Dinamo Brest’s stadium in a large James Bond style jeep, blowing kisses and waving to those in attendance.

Maradona had previously been working as a coach at UAE side Al-Fujairah FC but he has now relocated to Brest in order to embark on a new challenge in what has been a colourful career.

"I am not afraid of the challenge, I am not afraid of the serious projects and these people seem very serious to me,” said Maradona.

"I needed a challenge, an important project to show that I never stopped working.

"I take it with all the affection of the world, respecting the people who gave me this opportunity.

"We are going to have faith again, to grow together in harmony with a great team, taking the kids out of the academies to prove them and make them great."

The controversial former Argentina manager had a lot of airtime during the 2018 World Cup, where he made rude hand gestures to opposition supporters, smoked a cigar from his box, fell asleep during a game, while he was also rushed off to hospital.

He was also heavily criticised for comments he made about England after they defeated Colombia in the last-16, which he described as a “monumental robbery”, while he said that the referee "knows a lot about baseball but has no idea about football", for which he later apologised on his Instagram account.
