*Nigel Adkins has since been appointed Charlton manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal*
In a flash Nigel Adkins has gone from a 25/1 outsider to the hot 1/3 favourite for the Charlton job, which opened on Monday following the resignation of Lee Bowyer who has since returned to Birmingham City.
Adkins has been out-of-work since leaving Hull City at the end of the 2018/19 season, however he’s by no means been out of the public eye having taken his endless positivity and optimism over to the medium of Twitter where he frequently posts inspirational videos and messages.
Adkins did a credible job in difficult circumstances at Hull, while he previously shook a struggling Southampton side out of their downwards spiral by leading the club to consecutive promotions from league One into the Premier League, before he made way for Mauricio Pochettino - a controversial decision at the time.
Adkins, a former physio, has also taken Scunthorpe into the Championship on two occasions, one of which was via the play-offs.
On the flip side he struggled at Sheffield United, before a certain Chris Wilder came in, while he was unable to rejuvenate Reading during his 20 month tenure. Although the latter’s financial problems at the time certainly hindered Adkins’ work.
Earlier this season Adkins was hotly linked with the Tranmere job, but in the end nothing became of it and Keith Hill took over.
Adkins could be an attractive option given his experience and success at winning three promotions from League One, but whether fans view him as the right fit is open to debate.
After all, it's a vacancy that is sure to appeal to numerous managers.
The League One club are now situated in the play-offs after caretaker Johnnie Jackson led his side to a 3-2 comeback win over Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.
Now he's got a taste for it club legend Jackson will no doubt feel that he is the right man to continue leading the club until the end of the season, Michael Laudrup has also been linked, as have former Addicks managers Chris Powell and Alan Curbishley, while Danny Cowley looks like he’s off to Portsmouth.
